Apple's Dominance in the Accessory Market With the iPad Dock

By Nicholas Jacobellis

It's quite breathtaking how far we have come technologically speaking. Ten years ago nobody could have foreseen the world of personal computing being turned on its head by Apple with the introduction of the iPad, and the inevitable iPad dock to transform this good device into a laptop. Nobody ten years ago could have seen the release of the iPhone, with accessories like the iPhone charger and iPhone case to complete it. Nobody could have forecasted that Apple was on the verge of dominating the marketplace.

Now it appears that Apple is everywhere, in every aspect of our lives. The iPhone commands between 25% and 30% of the total marketplace, while the RIM Blackberry hardly gets 18% and the Android program phones have a powerful 40% to 50% market domination. However the difference is the android platform comes on different phones, from Samsung to Motorola, but the iPhone platform is on just one phone, the iPhone. With this individual phone domination over the cell phone market, it's no wonder why Apple is doing so well for itself.

What makes Apple such an interesting company to look at as far as accounting and finance is not just their niche market dominance over the cell phone world, but their prominence in the new tablet world that they, themselves, authored. More people have iPads now than they did when the iPad first came out, and with the introduction of the iPad it's really no wonder why. With a tablet that can last over 10 hours on one single battery charge, an app store particularly designed for Apple products, and an already tremendous reputation for ingenuity and creativity, Apple has taken the ball, picked it up, and ran with it in this new market.

It's not just the technology niche market that Apple has been able to corner, and command, but the technological accessory market, something that Apple has also been able to control. Their iPhone can take only one case, manufactured by one company, Apple, and iPhone case that they manufacture is designed to safeguard the iPhone from just about everything. As well, what comes with the iPhone is another nifty little piece of technology, the iPhone charger. What makes this charger so different from other chargers is that it's specifically designed for the iPhone, iPod and iPad, and is not universal for other platforms. The dock for Apple's iPad is also cool because it turns the first tablet into a mobile laptop, or a mobile television, however you want to look at it. One company that specializes in Apple accessories is i Luv.

At the end of the day, the one business that has been very successful over the last decade is Apple. No other business has amassed such wealth as Apple, no other company has come up with new technologies at the rate that Apple launches them, and no company has been as successful with their release of new products as Apple has been. It's going to be a tall order for other businesses to step up to the plate and challenge Apple outright in the technology department.
